The 6kA 50A Miniature Circuit Breaker represents the upper tier of residential and light commercial protection devices, engineered specifically for circuits that demand high continuous current capacity. With a 50-ampere rating, this MCB is the definitive choice for the most demanding electrical applications including large industrial machinery, commercial kitchen suites, three-phase workshop equipment, heavy-duty HVAC systems, electric vehicle fast chargers, and sub-main distribution circuits feeding multiple downstream loads. The robust 6kA breaking capacity ensures reliable interruption of severe short-circuit faults up to 6,000 amperes, providing critical protection for both personnel and expensive equipment while maintaining the structural integrity of the breaker itself.
Manufactured to meet rigorous international safety standards, this 50A MCB fully complies with IEC60898-1 and carries both CE and UKCA certifications, ensuring legal compliance for installations across the United Kingdom and European markets. The sophisticated thermal magnetic trip mechanism delivers two complementary layers of protection: the thermal bimetal element responds to prolonged overload conditions by accurately mimicking cable heating curves, while the electromagnetic coil reacts within milliseconds to short-circuit events. With support for 1, 2, 3, or 4-pole configurations, 50/60Hz frequency operation, and standard 35mm DIN rail mounting, this circuit breaker delivers uncompromising professional-grade protection for any high-demand electrical installation requiring dependable overcurrent safeguarding at higher amperages.
Selecting a 50A rated MCB is essential when standard 40A or 32A protection would be insufficient for your equipment or circuit demands. This higher current rating makes the breaker perfectly suited for dedicated circuits powering industrial motors up to 18kW (three-phase), large commercial ovens and catering equipment, workshop machinery including compressors and welders, electric vehicle charging stations requiring 11kW or higher output, and sub-main distribution feeders supplying multiple consumer units or lighting distribution boards. The 6kA breaking capacity provides a substantial safety margin above typical commercial fault current levels, ensuring the breaker will safely clear even severe short-circuit events without welding contacts, generating dangerous arc flash, or rupturing its insulated housing. Unlike fuses that require complete replacement after every fault event, this resettable MCB can be simply switched back on after identifying and resolving the underlying issue, dramatically reducing downtime and ongoing maintenance costs for commercial operations.
Furthermore, the thermal magnetic trip mechanism offers two distinct layers of protection that work in perfect harmony. The thermal element uses a precision-calibrated bimetal strip that bends gradually under sustained overcurrent, accurately mimicking the heat buildup in your wiring insulation and tripping only when truly dangerous temperature thresholds are reached—preventing nuisance tripping while ensuring genuine protection. The magnetic element operates nearly instantaneously during short-circuit conditions, limiting let-through energy to less than 1 millisecond and protecting sensitive downstream electronics and VFD drives from damage. With multiple trip curve options (B, C, and D curves available), you can precisely match the breaker's response characteristics to your specific load type—whether that is purely resistive heating elements, motor-driven equipment with moderate startup surges, or transformer-coupled devices with extreme inrush currents. This level of customization, combined with UKCA and CE certification, makes this 6kA 50A MCB the professional-grade choice for any electrical installation requiring dependable, code-compliant overcurrent protection for higher-amperage, mission-critical circuits.

1. What applications require a 50A MCB instead of a lower rating like 40A or 32A?
A 50A MCB is required when continuous circuit load exceeds 40A. Typical applications include 11kW electric vehicle charging stations (drawing approximately 45A), industrial motors up to 18kW (three-phase), large commercial ovens and cooking suites, workshop compressors and welders, electric boilers, and sub-main feeders supplying multiple distribution boards. Always calculate your actual continuous load before selecting.
2. What is the minimum cable size required for a 50A circuit protected by this MCB?
For a 50A circuit, the minimum recommended cable size is 10mm² for standard PVC-insulated copper conductors in open air or conduit. For longer runs exceeding 30 metres, or for cables installed in thermal insulation, 16mm² is often required to prevent excessive voltage drop and overheating. For three-phase 50A circuits, 6mm² may suffice for short runs, but 10mm² is strongly recommended. Always consult the latest IET Wiring Regulations (BS 7671) for specific installation methods.
3. Can I use this 50A MCB for a 50A continuous load like an electric vehicle charger?
Yes, but with important considerations. For continuous loads operating for 3+ hours (EV chargers, electric heating), regulations require derating to 80% of rated current. For a 50A MCB, this means the maximum continuous load should not exceed 40A. For true 50A continuous loads (11.5kW at 230V), you would need a 63A MCB. For EV charging at 50A, upgrade to the 63A version of this MCB series.
4. What is the difference between Ics and Icn, and why are they both 6kA on this breaker?
Icn (Rated Short-Circuit Breaking Capacity) is the fault current the MCB can interrupt once and still function afterwards. Ics (Service Short-Circuit Breaking Capacity) is the fault current the MCB can interrupt repeatedly and still operate normally. On this breaker, both ratings are equal at 6kA, which is excellent – it means after clearing a maximum fault, the breaker remains fully operational rather than needing replacement, unlike many budget breakers where Ics is only 50-75% of Icn.
5. How do I correctly select between B, C, and D curve for my 50A application?
Select B-curve (3-5x 50A = 150-250A) for purely resistive loads like water heaters, ovens, and electric furnaces. Select C-curve (5-10x 50A = 250-500A) for general motor loads, lighting circuits with ballasts, HVAC equipment, and workshop machinery – this is the most common choice for 50A industrial applications. Select D-curve (10-20x 50A = 500-1000A) for high-inrush equipment like large transformers, X-ray machines, welding equipment, and motors with very high starting currents (cranes, lifts, large compressors).
